Value of the new recreation center
Contributed by: Diana Jewett on 10/7/2007

There have been articles written in favor of the Northglenn rec
center and some against it because of the cost. In reality the
new center will cost $10-20 per month per household over a period
of 20 years. We pay interest when we borrow money on our homes,
our cars, and other large purchases.

Some have written about the intrinsic benefits of a new rec
facility. If you haven't been to our present center, why not
give it a try? The rec center and the senior center have a list
of available activities which include weight lifting, swimming,
palates, yoga, T'ai Chi, softball, basketball, water aerobics,
and walking among other social activities. There are also
gambling trips, restaurant trips, RTD trips for a few hours and
for a few days. Stop by & find out what you might be interested
in. Getting together with people with like interests is fun and
stimulating and you will feel better!

If it's a tax increase that people are scared of, remember this -
to use a nearby Rec Center for fitness, swim lessons, preschool
or other community actives you would probably end up paying more
as a non-resident than the small tax increase to have your own
new Recreation Center in your community. Our present building may
not be around as the upkeep is too expensive and the building is too small.

A price tag cannot be placed on wellness, social opportunities,
involving kids in their community and giving seniors a place to
call their own. Although it cannot be specifically defined,
there is a cost savings to not only the City but society if kids
are doing something productive with their time, and making good
choices, rather than getting in trouble with the law.

Exactly!!! Being part of a viable, vibrant community means that you often support things financially that you yourself may never use. At least try it - or let others have the chance to. How can this possibly be bad for Northglenn?

Northglenn has supported its current recreation center for thirty years now. If we want to continue to be a city with a recreation/theater/senior center we need to support a new one because the old one will be torn down due to the high cost of maintaining the old facility. The only city in the north metro area without a recreation center is Federal Heights. Having grown up in that city I can simply state that they do not enjoy the quality of community that we have here in Northglenn. Please support the new community center and maintain Northglenn as an attractive and vibrant place for all of our citizens.
