Feed the birds in winter

Water can be harder to find in icy weather. Try offering a birdbath with a low- watt heater to keep water ice free. Attract birds with sunflower and safflower seeds. Or give them a variety with a mix that contains oats, corn, wheat. High calorie foods like suet are vital for birds to help them stay warm. No suet? Mix peanut butter and cornmeal. Fresh fruit is scarce in winter. Hang an apple or banana and watch the birds devour it all. Hang the feeder in a protected area among evergreens to keep our friends and food out of the snow and wind.
