My husband and I wanted to do a little something special for spring break of 2000. We decided to drive with our 12 yr.old son into Las Vegas.
Sounded like tons of fun! We left before the sun came up in our little Saturn and spun through the snow of the Rocky Mountains. Driving straight through, we made it to Vegas as night was falling.
Not having cell phones yet, we excitedly hit the first pay phone we found to call any of the theme hotels for a room for the weekend. We called up-town, down-town, not a room could be found anywhere. Who knew some big event like
Nascar racing
would be taking place in Vegas this particular weekend?? Fortunately our son seemed oblivious to our dilemma
,
enjoying his makeshift room in the backseat of the car. We ended up downtown.
In view, not far from the action, sat a little dingy kinda scary looking hotel. My husband parked, stepped out of the car, and went inside the office. Moments later he emerged key in hand. Hungry and ready for fun, we quickly threw our bags in the second floor room and off on foot we went. Downtown the music was great! The food good enough! The atmosphere the best! After some hours we went back to the room. My husband wanted to try his hand at the gambling.
I told him to go enjoy himself, but not to be too long, as I wasn't real comfortable there alone. Off he went and up went the chair against the door. My son found what he liked to watch on television, and I decided to shower and call it a day. I pulled the tan shower curtain back to reveal a tub, not so suitable for a human to bathe. And to my horror, found patches in the shower curtain that indicated its original color as white, not tan. I quickly relieved myself, careful not to touch the pot, trying not to peek at what I might see, washed my hands and exited the bathroom.
Taking notice of the floor, I kept my shoes on and threatened my son to keep his on as well.
I figured if the bathroom and floor were in that condition, what of the bed? My husband was back within the hour, pockets a little emptier. I educated him about the room. We collected anything we could find in the car to lay on the beds. Clothes on and all, we managed to catch a little sleep. That morning needless to say we left our room. We hit the highway heading east, found a nice clean hotel in Mesquite. We swam in the pool, spent the night and even slept in the bed! We showered that morning and headed home. All the time our son never missed a beat. Happy as a little lark he was!
And although it may have not been the most successful trip to Las Vegas, it was certainly the most memorable!
