In 2007, the YWCA of Boulder County began a new project, "Let's Talk - Conversations on Race." Each month, community members join together to have meaningful dialogue about race and racism to grow beyond the superficial to develop a deeper level of understanding.
Trained professionals guide participants through the process of self-examination and exploration as well as lead the group discussions. Individuals benefit from sharing their thoughts and feelings in a safe environment. Nearly 30 participants have attended the first two sessions and have discussed topics ranging from white privilege to the affects of racism on our youth.
Conversations on Race is a part of the YWCA of Boulder County's Dialogues on Diversity Program. In addition to the Conversations on Race project, the committee also coordinates a "Race in America" Book Club in collaboration with Reading to End Racism, hosts "Unlearning Racism" trainings, and provides public presentations.
This program is directed by the Public Policy Committee, an action committee comprised of YWCA board and community members and focuses on the protection of children, the empowerment of women and girls, and the elimination of racism.
This valuable project benefits the community and should be considered for the Community Giving Campaign.
