Math-it is not just for breakfast anymore
Contributed by: David Kirch on 4/25/2007

Tricia A. Fitzpatrick has taught at Northglenn High School for the last 29 years. Even though this is her last year, she continues to give her students her best everyday. In the class room she is able to generate enthusiasm among her students for learning, despite having to compete with all the modern distractions of cellphones, text messaging and ipods. She rarely misses a day of school.

That she rarely has problems with discipline or attendance is attributed to her ability to make her 150 students feel that she really cares about them and to make every student feel he or she is important. Not only does she go to dozens of after school events of her students to show them her support, in the class room she goes that extra mile of also teaching them important values such as respect for each other, courtesy and hard work. If the student is having personal problems, she is always there to listen. Every student is important to her whether the student gets straight A's or is struggling. She goes out of her way to make a new student feel welcome.

She is constantly in communication with the parents, letting them know of the studentsprogress and if the student is having problems. If she sees the student outside of the class room she always gives the student a smile and a word of encouragement. She is a source of encouragement and guidance to other teachers and administrators.

She loves math and lets her students know it. She has a gift for making math fun and challenging for her students and making them want to be in her class room.

I had a teacher like that. And it is her fault that I still have all those multiplication and division tables running around in my head. My wife says I even talk in my sleep in numbers. Which is better than talking in my sleep in names I guess. I remember many of my teachers and each had a part in making me the person I am today. Last week I was back in my old home town and I was able to walk through the halls of my High School. What a thrill. I even found my old wall locker. And when the bell rang I didn't have to take off running for my class room. Loved it. Leonard Avery
