#1. THEY HAVE THEIR MINDS MADE UP. I've always found that when we keep doing what we've been doing, we keep getting what we've been getting. But, when we change the way we look at our circumstances, our circumstances change. We all need to have an open mind, to remain open to new ideas. When we make decisions based on existing beliefs, we will only get what we have always gotten. And that is a recipe for disaster.
We all need to consider new perspective in our approach to running and building a successful community. What works for some in some situations and towns, may not fit our particular city or town. Successful commissioners have minds like sponges.
#2. THEY JUST WANT TO CARE FOR THE CITIZENS. All of us want to provide for our citizens with the best care possible. That is why we joined the Planning Commission. But, in practice that isn't the only task commissioners are faced with.
#3. THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND BUSINESS. Most Commissioners simply won't follow the axiom, "Get the Big Idea and all else follows." I have been asked by others why they should have to inconvenience themselves with understanding the in's and out's of business. Unfortunately, they've minimized the fact that a City's Practice is first and foremost a BUSINESS. The reason their business exists it to treat and care for Citizens. Yet, it needs to be operated like any other business.
The office doors need to be open on time, the lights need to be turned on and everyone in the office needs to be ready to take on the orders of the day.
When a City contracts with a consultant or business advisor. A consultant designs the plans on which knowledge, experience and encouragement, will take the Department where they need to go much faster and in a more organized fashion than they would on their own. When we use the knowledge and assistance of a consultant, starting, building, and managing a City is much EASIER and a lot more profitable. We are free to place more focus on care for Citizens.
The combination of City-Consultant increases self-confidence and potential because it is a "GET 'R DONE & DONE RIGHT" team effort.

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”
