Living the Scottish-American dream
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 9/25/2006

America offers diverse selections of choices to work and/or to live. I could live in the rural wheatfields and oilfields of Kansas, or work in a college town in Oklahoma or Iowa; dense American cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, New York City. We can choose our cities by size, by weather, by politics, by industry, by taxes, by school, by cost of living. We choose to dwell in the front range, mountains and foothills.

Taxes always seem to run too high but the pleasant people don't seem to mind if the taxes consistently show up in bicycle trails, parks and restrooms the outdoorsy Coloradoans love and use. Coloradoans are close to a rural work ethic that think work and enterprise is good. Living here, we just expect that the goal of a city is to go forward (1) step at a time and attempt to provide value and service and turn a profit.

I stopped in the Tug's pub I used to frequent, and saw many of the people I hung out with, after the Highlander Rugby Football (39) match vs. the Denver University RFC (12), it was as if I had never left. I was happy to see some of my favorite compatriots, the beer and the food were so familiar. I am more at peace with my beliefs in God, and have become an active Olde Boys.

All in all, we Highlanders are very happy with this move to the Northglenn Wyco Park, and feel we have made what can only be considered a terrific decision. Many a heartland community have faced the prospect of becoming a "ghost town" after harboring a militia of ruggers. And as older inhabitants die and younger residents move away from, some of these communities revert to Frontier Territory with less thansix inhabitants per square mile.

But not to worry, we Highlanders won't allow scallywags to run through the Wyco parks willy-nilly during the hours of 1-4 p.m.on game day. Next match is Oct. 14 vs. Gentlemen of Aspen and Metro State.

HAIL ALL HIGHLANDERS.

DOC'S RUGBY WISDOM: Principle #3 (for wingers)- Optimism is a force multiplier. Believe that things will work out, that they will look better in the pub after the game. Everything's going to be OK. Repeat the words to yourself as a mantra, instill a spirit of indomitable optimism in your outlook and you will attract success into your life.
