In the urban city, community development is apt to be carried out as a "super-organization" that fails to engage most people in any meaningful way; or it may focus on an extremely narrow slice of the total community in terms of limited issues or limited geography.
Community development should keep decision making at the local level and government responsive to local citizens. There is opportunity for local Northglenn citizens recognizing, defining, and resolving our own problems and issues.
Northglenn Community Development director, Jim Hayes, is one of the new decision makers. He must challenge existing social systems as a hypothetical question; "What if we . . . ?" It accelerates the pace of planned change. It broadens citizen interest and concern.
All in all, this tends to suggest new activity, new patterns, and change that is more rapid and involves more people, more directly, than any time in history.

Keep in mind the deadlines. Keep in mind who might nominate us. If we miss a deadline this year, aim for next year. If we ask people to nominate us, we will want to provide them with DRAFT LETTERS of nomination that fulfill the requirements. They SHOULD modify the draft. But we are asking them to do less of the work, than otherwise. Doing our work is what counts. Applying for awards provides some comic relief. “Awards are like hemorrhoids; sooner or later every ‘a**-hole’ will get one.” You can’t win if you don’t play.”

Now is the time to think about getting some awards for our accomplishments. This may be a 3- 5- 8- year campaign. You can not win if you do not apply, or have others nominate you. View this campaign as different from GRANT WRITING applications. There are also Grant applications which are their own prestige awards if you receive them. I have found that writing such applications helps me think through projects, so even if I do not win, it serves the agenda. There is always next year. People tend to get awards for their first book, or a distinguished article, or projects, or lifetime accomplishments.
