Letter: The expensive new Northglenn rec center
Contributed by: Ervin Baker on 6/27/2007

Editor's note: This letter is a response to Northglenn City Councilmember Gaye Monroe's column, " Why a recreation center is important to Northglenn."

If the new rec center is approved, it will cost an estimated $200,000 per month for 20 years. This is based on the $29,000,000 center. The interest on the bonds will increase the total cost to over $45,000,000.

During the eight public meetings on the rec center, less than 1 percent of the Northglenn citizens gave input on what was wanted in the rec center. During the two meetings of "did we get it right?" less than 0.3 percent of the Northglenn citizens gave input. These few people are to decide what the rec center will contain? They will then have represented the 33,000 citizens in Northglenn.

In order to pay for the rec center, a mill levy increase of 76 percent will have to be added to the Northglenn city tax. In addition, the value of the land required for the new rec center is $3,354,120. This is computed as $7 per square foot with 43,650 square feet per acre and the stated 11 acres required. Even if Northglenn donates the land, the rec center will consume $3,354,120 of property and this cost should have been added to the rec center cost.

The article that appeared in the June 21, 2007 YourHub.com print edition (" Why a recreation center is important to Northglenn") contains no facts, figures, statistics or studies. The article must be considered of little or no value when it comes to spending $45,000,000 plus $3,354,120 for land. The rec center will total out to over $48,000,000.

In addition, a published amount to improve our existing rec center was quoted to be $17.6 million. A request for the report resulted in a "no such report exists" from the Northglenn City Manager's Office.

The price for the land should not be included in the price for a recreation center. If I own a piece of vacant land and I want to build a house on it I'm not going to charge myself for land I already own. The same applies for the city. We need to remember that in the 2006 election 64% of Northglenn voters, voted in favor of the city getting public input and do preliminary design work for a recreation center. The city has done that. Ultimatly, it is up to us the residents of Northglenn to decide if we want a recreation center. Chris De May
