In the past couple years Northglenn has lost its library to Thornton, Huron Middle School to Westminster and a number of our children have been forced to attend school outside of Northglenn. Don't let our recreation center become the next casualty.
A new recreation center will be approximately 96,000 square feet versus the present 45,000 square foot center. A larger center will serve more of us and decrease the need for us to go to neighboring cities. When we use Thornton's, Broomfield's and Westminster's recreation centers, we have to pay non-resident rates. Wouldn't it be better to spend our money here in Northglenn? With gas prices increasing its important to have a recreation center close to home. In 2006 the recreation center recovered approximately 44% of its operating cost primarily because of the cost to repair or replace failing equipment. As these cost continue to increase there may come a time we can no longer afford our current recreation center. A new, larger recreation center will need more employees but the building will be more energy efficient and operate more efficiently helping to offset that cost. Having more amenities will increase usage of the center and this will also help recover more of its operating cost. A recreation center will never recover all of its cost, but neighboring cities recover an average of 80% of their operating cost with newer and larger centers verses our 44%.
It makes more sense to have a recreation center that more of us can use and operates more efficiently. My tax dollars will be used directly on services to our citizens instead of being used to repair an out of date and obsolete recreation center. Take pride in Northglenn, vote yes for a new recreation center. It is critical to make sure you register to vote so check with the City Clerk's office at 303-450-8755 or 303-450-8757 today.
