COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 10/20/2007

Readers pick up community papers for a number of different reasons, but the common thread is a desire to connect to their neighborhoods. These newspapers may not have the latest bombing in Iraq, but they do have "scrap-book" news. Articles you can cut out and put in your scrapbook, or your refrigerator, that will affect your family. This is still important to a lot of people.

Interest in schools and neighborhood planning activities and their accomplishments propagate confidence in their community's ability to get the job done. These are what community journalism does best. Sections and local editions devoted to city neighborhoods and suburban communities are now standard in Metro newspapers.

Although weekly papers can't report breaking news with any timeliness, they can shine when it comes to local leg-work and story development. Dailies are spread too thin. We know the neighborhood better, go to the meetings, witness the events, and have more contacts. We find out things that the reporters can't. Community papers are tempting to group owners who can combine production costs to maximize profit. But too many weeklies just "wait for it to happen." It's not easy to find talented journalists interested in a career at a weekly where the pay is poor, the responsibilities BROAD and the excitement LIMITED. But its not impossible.

Just look for example of the yourhub.com success. Our own literate, community citizens are participating in the journalism process and reporting their surroundings, events, commentaries, and happening in our communities.

“I am from OSBORNE.” Of course, they had never heard of that and they’d say well where is that. He would say: “It’s way up in the North central Kansas surrounded by the United States.” So don’t you EVER FORGET where you’re from. When they ask you where this is, you know what to tell them. Don’t ever forget the values - LOVE of COUNTRY, LOVE of FAMILY, - that you learned here. Because no matter where you go, no matter what you do, no matter how well your education, those basic VALUES came from rural Kansas and makes the country what it is. I have found that there is NOTHING you can’t ACHIEVE if you BELIEVE and have those basic VALUES and if you are willing to SACRIFICE. There’s nothing that you can’t BECOME. You are captain of you ship. You are going to chart your own course.
