Retaining Merit Scholars
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 4/23/2008

Northglenn can never keep all of her sons and daughters at home, nor should we. We should continue to share our young talent with the rest of the world. However, too many of our BEST and BRIGHTEST leave Northglenn for career opportunities elsewhere, never to return to our native city.

If we are to develop our economy in the manner we must, if we are to continue to improve our educational system, we must look to these individuals to make vital contributions. We need their minds, imaginations and energies.

To attract these students after they graduate we must provide career opportunities and incentives to put their talents to work for Northglenn, and Colorado.

I am therefore recommending that a program be developed to forgive a portion of Student Loan Expenses incurred by our City's National Merit Scholars. This program will apply to Northglenn National Merit Scholars graduating from Northglenn High School and Thornton High School in 2008 and thereafter.

Eligible students could attend any accredited College or University in the Country to receive the education they desire. Upon graduation, they will then they will then certify with the City that they meet the conditions of the program and are employed in Northglenn.

After those conditions are certified, an amount up to $2 000 a year in Loan payments will be repaid by the City for each year these talented young Northglenners work in Northglenn.

Northglenn has long been exporting our most basic and valuable resources to other states and countries. This program can help reverse the trend, opening the door for a return of our FINEST STUDENTS.
