CONSENSUS MAKERS

Any unanimity of action shared by a diverse group must be founded on common qualities and shared motivations. How successful they are depends upon minimizing the differences among people that are needlessly restrictive or disruptive. Human development can be sustained with purposeful action. The challenge is to change the patterns of consumption and production using technology to achieve greater efficiency and reduce waste and pollution.

Clearly there is a group in the Country that is affluent, highly educated, and professional. Professionals in “business services” and “applied sciences” tend to be affluent and conservative. We are asked to celebrate the growth of a more competent America in which those with advanced degrees go to the best schools, intermarry, earn well, live together in enclaves, send their children to good preparatory schools and manage the Nation. We recognize the rightness and necessity of this kind of development because a complex America now requires the services of those with high IQ. Large numbers of Americans have asked for labeled and inspected foods, clean water and air, old-age assistance, impartial and competent courts, regulated utilities, public transportation, educational opportunities, and a host of other protections, privileges, and amenities that only government can help provide. This doesn’t sound like a call to dismantle government and let free market run the course.
