Absolute Power on the Planning Commission
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 4/17/2008

"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." There are many examples of forthright leaders who have transformed into tyrants. Demeaning the fellow Commissioner allows the Chairman to feel more powerful and then to use even harsher power strategies.

As the use of informational power diminishes, and the use of coercive power increases. I had reasons to reject the Chairwoman's influences. The "Doc" needs to be independent, to be his own free thinker. I resisted her power play.

A leader who is more aware of the various options will be more successful and effective. No woman, no man, who wants to do it all herself, or to get all the credit for doing it, will make a great leader. I should have tried to anticipate those verbal assaults she might use and prepared to counter those one by one. "So, I'll take the high road, and she'll take the low road, and I'll get the truth before ye."

One of the most common ways to assess an organization is to assign a committee or an individual the task, as part of their service responsibilities. Assessment recognizes the potentials of people and values evidence in decision making. We know our strengths and our weaknesses and now, pursue our quest for excellence.

Let us bring all our professional skills and creativity to bear on how best to understand the impact our work has on the citizens, and how to create positive input from our neighbors.

I believe the Chairman - Mayor should not debate but maintain arms length distance from these discussions. The main duty of the Chairman - Mayor during a meeting is to facilitate the meeting. If the vote is of no great consequence, the Chairman - Mayor should be reluctant to vote even then. "It is good practice for Chairman - Mayor to maintain a neutral position during meetings at which they preside.

I have a concern about the cumulative effect of widespread practice that has been deemed to menace the integrity and the competency of service, and that the government relies on limited evidence of actual or apparent impropriety.

The speculative benefits of the implied interests are not sufficient to justify this crudely crafted burden on a man's freedom to engage in expressive activities. The importance of setting high ethical standards for those in government, most proposals have the potential to impinge upon free speech rights.

I am embarrassed for you, and I am embarrassed for the circus that your Council has become. There were 2 ways that you could stop me. They could have shot me, or they could come up with some bogus charges to try and indict me to get me off the Planning Commission. Other than that I was going to push it to the end.

Some people have portrayed me as a "sexist" or "racist", but I am just very, very, very tenacious. Early on, I distinguished myself by the ferocity of my hostility toward Communist governments and movements. "Make no mistake; this leads us in the direction of Socialism."

I have vigorously defended myself against all charges, which I have labeled as "Nonsense." Nothing I have done warranted impeachment.

The only way to accomplish harmony is to desire it, then take the time to work at it. Endure the sacrifice that goes with it. It is not easy to bring about "something good" because it involves personal participation. Our task is NOT to suffer for our beliefs. Our task is to accomplish "good in our own world." Treat others as we wish to be treated.

As leaders, we will be measured by a simple test. How well did we use the assets we were given to make Northglenn a better place for future generations? Are we hopeful about the future for young Northglenners? Are we willing to turn our attention to their future and focus on their opportunities?

We must unite behind common goals: a high quality education for all Northglenners providing the knowledge, skills and enhanced training for talented workers in our innovative economy.

"Sacrifices are needed for us to be better people."

I know that men’s motives are generally mixed. If, then I see a woman pursuing a line of conduct which apparently might be explained as thoroughly selfish, and yet might be explained as partly selfish and partly benevolent, then; since absolutely selfish character are somewhat RARE, it will be safer for me in my dealings with the woman to assume the more complex hypothesis to be true; although were to undertake an elaborate examination of the question. I ought to BEGIN by ascertaining whether the hypothesis of pure selfishness would quite account for all she does.
