Executive Sessions: Meetings behind closed doors
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 6/10/2008

The charismatic qualities of our elected officials is "unbuffered", and the recommendations of leaders are transmitted informally from chairperson to selected members. Screening of the bills threatens the ability of Council to perform the role expected of them - the representation of their constituents.

Local councilmen whom represent our individual Wards may need a special committee to review the needs of our local government. But, communication among Council, and between staff, can be kept confidential ONLY through INFORMAL meetings of small groups inside and outside of the Chambers. Today, it is difficult to justify any closed meetings.

This is exactly why the Open Meeting Laws were enacted.

Imparting this knowledge is only lighting other men’s candle by our lamp, without depriving ourselves of any flame. The words imply TRUTH, PROOF, and CONVICTION. If you have knowledge, let others light their candles at it. Man often acquire knowledge to discover his ignorance, to see, and to regret his follies. For every man of sound brain knows something worth knowing, better than yourself.
