Basic principles behind Robert's rules
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 6/18/2008

Someone has to facilitate or direct the discussion, & KEEP ORDER! So, it had better be the Chairman, or pass the gavel to the Vice-Chair.

All members of the group have the right to bring up ideas, discuss them, and come to a conclusion. Members should come to an agreement about what to do.

Members should understand that the majority rules, that the rights of the minority are always protected by assuring they the right to speak and to vote.

The rules show us how and when to apply the rules so that we can expedite our business quickly and efficiently while ensuring fairness and due process.

Roberts Rules of Order are treated as governing when procedural questions arise. Some chairpersons maintain firm control of Commission proceedings; others do not. Some commissions utilize staff services extensively; others do not. Some chairpersons know and apply Roberts Rules of Order; some do not. Some commissioners deliberate at length on many bills; others tend to act quickly. Some commissions solicit testimony; some do not.

Time is precious, respect it. Our time is very valuable. Please, for your sake regard it as a valuable commodity; that is what it is. Don't let people throw you off your course. If you have an agenda, stick to it. If you get derailed, try to get right back to your agenda. You'll find that if you adopt this philosophy you will get much more done. Be proactive, play your work and work your plan. I have yet to meet a successful person who doesn't plan his business agenda. Simply ask people how you can improve what you are doing and then listen; often the questions of others will provide some great ideas. Don't be afraid to take risks in life. Fear will keep you from living your life to its full potential.
