The nature of the thing has its own expression according to the materials, according to the method, according to the man. And when a building is of that character, it is beautiful. These ideas, these structures in tangible spirit form so that life is lived in them and architecture is an experience. As beautiful buildings get constructed and built, we look at it to find out what the secret is that keeps it permanently "young" and always working, and never lets it die.
Principles never die. And when I look back at these things we have done, I think, "Well that is pretty good stuff."There are many things we can do better.
Keep your minds open. Keep inquiring and try to drive that nail a little better than you drove the one before, and see the mistake you made when you slammed the wood alongside, instead of the nail. You learn more from that one blow than you do from the one you hit the nail. And that applies all down the line.
What I aim to do here is to create an atmosphere in which those incidentals which eventually become so important can form, can grow, in our hearts and minds.
It is a love of the thing he does that really qualifies him in the end. And unless we turn out to be better looking, better thinking, better able when we get through our term here, I haven't done much for you. And if I haven't done much for you, we haven't done much for ourselves.
