Liberalism on the Planning Commission
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 4/26/2008

Northglenn City Planning Commissioners have endorsed ideas shared by socialists. Their moral autonomy has come into play because they are independent of any higher authority. These Planning Commissioners make choices about the health, safety, and welfare and impose their decisions upon all Northglenners.

Liberal expectations hope that conflicts can be negotiated and their interests only can be accommodated. It follows, that any dissent from conservative points of view are not tolerated. Their deliberative ideals are aimed at consensus and a single idea of the "common good" and fail to protect the minority rights of our citizens. These Commissioners put their self government, in the service of some higher ideal - public order, economic progress, equality, and a personal vision of the good life, to take priority over basic and fundamental liberties.

I have warned about the tyranny of this quasi-judicial Planning Commission. They do not recognize limits in power that can be legitimately exercised over individuals. They represent a tyranny of opinion that demands conformity and inhibits individuality and independence.

Specific rights of all U.S. citizens guarantee liberty and protection against official abuses; Freedom of religion, freedom of speech and association, freedom to own property, and freedom to travel.

Government must be open to public inspection, policy must be publicly justified and public criticism must be permitted. As a "conservative", I worry about the consequences of what is done in the name of progress.

I favor capitalism and free enterprise. I doubt that Liberal social engineering will solve the problems of crime and poverty in our community. On the contrary, it creates attitudes and behaviors of dependence and entitlement. There is no moral obligation to transfer resources from the "rich" to the "poor." The government's interference in the local economy is the ultimate cause of poverty and thwarts creativity for the generation of financial independence.

A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.
