Hanavan, Metro top RMAC poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- August 15, 2006 -- The 2004 NCAA Division II women's soccer national champions and a playoff contender last season, Metropolitan State College of Denver has been selected to win the 2006 RMAC regular season. The Roadrunners received three more votes than cross town rival Regis University. The RMAC preseason poll and all-conference team is voted on by each of the nine head women's soccer coaches.

A first team All-American and the 2005 RMAC Player of the Year, Kylee Hanavan (Metro State) is voted as the 2006 RMAC Women's Soccer Preseason Player of the Year. Joining Hanavan from MSCD on the preseason team is midfielder Kira Sharp (West Jordan, Utah).

Regis' Tara Kirkpatrick (Lincoln, Neb.) earned preseason Defender of the Year honors. An All-American as a sophomore, Kirkpatrick was named to the Midwest Region first team and to the All-RMAC first team. Teammate Kelly Labor (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was voted on by the coaches as the top freshman entering the league. Alongside Kirkpatrick on the preseason team from Regis is defenders Katie Jardine (Fort Collins, Colo.), Meghan Thompson (Seattle, Wash.) and goalkeeper Joanna Humphreys (Arvada, Colo.).

The Thunderwolves placed two players on the preseason team with forward Beccah Drennan (Fountain, Colo.) and midfielder Robin Hayes (Aurora, Colo.). New Mexico Highlands goalkeeper McKaila Dorman earned preseason honors as did Fort Lewis defender Katrina Kranzler (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Mesa State midfielder Lauren Sell (Grand Junction, Colo.).

Fort Lewis College, which received a number two seed in last year's RMAC Tournament, received 51 points for third place. They were followed by CSU-Pueblo, New Mexico Highlands, Colorado Mines, Mesa State, Adams State and Colorado Christian.
