Swimming at the Nash

Northglenn High School's swimming pool hosted the Kevin B. Nash Memorial Swim Meet on October 21, 2007 and was presented by Bee-Gee Masters swim club. Swimming at "The Nash" were almost eighty Master swimmers who made the trek through the rain, lighting, snow and thunder to participate in this event. Swimmers came from as far away as Colorado Springs and Granby for the chance to swim.

The array of ages swimming were from 21 to 79 years. The day's events started with the 500 yard freestyle and included the 50 yard sprint distances in the backstroke, breastroke, butterfly and freestyle to the final swim of the 1000 yard freestyle.
Two relays were swum as well. The first was the 200 medley of the four different strokes. The second one was of raw speed in the 200 freestyle. Relay teams from the Thornton Masters, Inverness Masters and Bee-Gee Masters were well represented in both relay events.

The meet had all types of different swimmers involved. There were novice swimmers who participated in this, the first meet of their lives to swimmers who this was the first swim meet in many years and veterans who have competed for years. Colorado Master Swimmers are some of the most completive in the nation and this swim meet was no different.

Some of the veterans who participated hold state or national or world age group records in various events. With the mix of swimmers the events were swum with grace, speed and a great deal of fun. The crowd watching the meeting was made-up of children of the swimmers, parents of the swimmers, some who have been going to swim meets since the swimmers where 10 years old. Boyfriends and girlfriends were well represented, plus a handful of in-laws also. A good time was had by all.

The two biggest teams represented in at "The Nash" meet were the Bee-Gees Masters and Thornton Masters. The Bee-Gees could not be missed in the gold and black polka-dotted swim suits. Thornton Master's brought a number of rookie swimmers who this was the first swim meet that they were swimming. Coach Reese shouted encouragement to all of the team's swimmers as they raced. Thornton won the overall title and the women's title. The Bee-Gees took the men's title.

The most notable swims were Don Heins butterfly accomplishments. Don who has only participating in swim meets since 2005 is a butterflyer of distance. Don will swim the 200 yard butterfly with no fear. The 200 yard butterfly is known to make strong men and women weak in shoulder and make them cry tears of joy when they finish. Don takes that race and makes it a warm-up.

At this meet, Don opened the meet by swimming 500 yard freestyle all butterfly and closed the meet by swimming the 1000 yard fly. Don stated that there were countless 50 yard butterfly swims before he swam his first 1000 yard swim. While swimming it he wondered why anyone would swim a 1000 yards of fly. But after finishing and catching his breath he wants to break 20 minutes for the 1000.

The purpose of this meet was to honor and share in the memory of Kevin B. Nash the captain of the Bee-Gees team who passed away on April 22, 2007 from complications due to surgery. The week before this he had swam at the Colorado State Master Swim Championship and helped to lead the Bee-Gees to a third place finish at the meet. The proceeds of "The Nash" will fund two scholarships to seniors who swan at the high school swimming.

Bee-Gee Masters is a master team primarily made-up of swimmers who live in the Broomfield and Greeley areas. The team members tend to live in these two areas, but members live as far away as Castle Rock. The team gets together for swim meets and socials a number times a year.
