Contributed by: City of Northglenn Public Communications on 7/7/2008

Elected officials from neighboring cities in the north metro area celebrated the 4th of July with a little friendly competition at the 29th Annual Mayor's Cup Raft Race held on July 4 in Webster Lake at E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park.

Mayors, council members, staff and family from the cities of Commerce City, Westminster, Thornton, Broomfield, Federal Heights, Brighton and Northglenn hit the waters to row in the race against time.

Mayor Kathie Novak said, "We are excited to have eight teams here today willing to brave the waters in a little patriotic competition and a whole lot of fun!"

This year's winner was the City of Thornton. Rafters included Mayor Pro Tem Steve Lebsock, Council member Eric Tade, recreational staff Renee Dobson, and Thornton Fire Department's Lee Whitner. Thornton smoked the waters with the finishing time of 1:53:28.

Hot on Thornton's tail was the City of Northglenn with its precision rafting team of Mayor Kathie Novak, her husband Warren Novak, Council member Jill Parsons and her husband, Alain Brule. Northglenn took second place with a time of 2:09:84.

A second Thornton team consisting of Mayor Eric Hansen, Council member Beth Humenik and recreational staff members Chris Steinke and Shelley Shipley claimed third with the time of 2:10:63.

The City of Federal Heights carried home the tail end trophy for dragging across the finish line with the slowest time. Federal Heights' rafters included council members Mike Cieszlak and Tanya Ishikawa, and Federal Heights Fire Department's Dwayne Harrold and city staff Becky Peters.
