A cut for a good cause
Contributed by: YourHub.com on 10/25/2006

Northglenn -- Northglenn High School and the surrounding community banded together well they found out one of their own was in trouble.

Shane Schofield, a senior on the football team, received the unexpected news a few weeks ago that he was suffering from Leukemia.

Leukemia is a type of cancers of the bone marrow that hinders creation of red and white blood cells and platelets, resulting in anemia, increased susceptibility to infection and impaired blood clotting.

He's currently in the hospital, and likely won't leave until the mid November.

Ed Hartnett, athletics director for Northglenn High School, volunteered to have his hair shaved if enough money was raised for Shane.

"Every community has a hero," Hartnett said. "Our hero happens to be a 17-year-old on floor five of Children's Hospital."

T-shirts were sold with Shane's No. 75 on the back. District officials donated money. Even Legacy High School, one of Northglenn's main rivals, collected about $200.

Buoyed by a $5,000 donation by team doctor Jan Strickland, more than $10,000 was raised, and at halftime of the Oct. 20 football game, Hartnett had his locks lopped off.

"It puts things in perspective," Hartnett said. "We are truly a community that comes together and has an enormous heart."

To make a donation to aid Shane, contact Northglenn High School at 720-972-4600.
