High school drag racers were held on Labor Day, Sept. 3, at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison.
The very popular event had 316 participants from various high schools throughout the state, with a wide assortment of vehicles. There were full-blown race cars, classic muscle cars, 4-cylinder imports, a family 4-door, a pink Volkswagen, motorcycles and one student even brought a school bus.
The staff at Bandimere was asked to pick 20 cars from this large group to award them trophies for being the best appearing car in the event.
Northglenn High School senior Brett Wieser and his classic 1967 Mercury Cougar was among that 20 and received a trophy.
The bus also won a trophy for being the most unique entry.
In Brett's first head-to-head race, he was paired up against the bus. Running at 34.5 seconds at 38 miles per hour, the bus was give a huge 1/2 track lead. At the green light, Brett floored the Cougar and the 289-cubic-inch 2-barrel V8 engine came to life. The Cougar ran 17.6 seconds at 78 mph and made up the big different on the track and beat the old bus to the finish line to take the win.
A fun time was had by all, with many kids getting to race side by side with police officers and their cars chasing them down the track with lights and sirens going.
In May 2008, Bandimere will host another high school drag race, so grab the family's old four-door and come out and have a run at the old school bus or even a police cruiser.
See ya at the track.
