Northglenn Judo Club hosting national tourney
Contributed by: John Miller on 3/31/2006

The 38th Annual Northglenn Judo Championship will be held starting at 9 a.m. April 8 at Northglenn High School.

The Northglenn Judo Championship is the largest judo tournament in the Rocky Mountain region and is a national-level event for adult athletes. Competition is for youth, adults, and masters over 30-years-old. Over 250 athletes from all over the country are expected to compete.

For the third year, the Northglenn Championship is a national-level event. Athletes in the adult weight categories earn points toward National ranking. This year the event takes place two weeks before the National Championship in Houston, which also serves as the trials to select the Pan American Championship Team. The No. 1-seeded athlete at the nationals has the advantage for team selection and many weight categories are close, so many top-ranked athletes are expected to compete.

A number of visually impaired athletes from the USA and England will compete in the tournament with fully sighted athletes. In addition, the event will serve as team trials for USA visually impaired athletes to determine the United States' representatives to the World Blind Judo Championship to be held in Bromat, France from June 29 to July 3.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. with junior and masters competition. At 1 p.m., adult competition will begin with World Blind Team Trials matches, followed immediately by regular adult competition for national point ranking. Competition is expected to last until at least 4 p.m. Medal matches will be occurring throughout the day.

Non-stop action on three contest areas in a full-contact Olympic Sport featuring spectacular throws, pins, chokes, and arm locks. Matches can be over in seconds with a powerful throw that finds a player knocked flat onto his back or with a submission chokehold or elbow-joint lock.

Spectator fee is $5 at the door.

Northglenn Judo Club is the longest continuously operating Judo club in Colorado. It is the seventh-largest club in the USA and has produced two Olympians and dozens of National Champions. The Northglenn coaching staff was named U.S. Olympic Committee's Developmental coaches of the year for 2002.

John Miller is the primary media contact for the Colorado Judo League.
