More than 250 athletes competed in the Northglenn Judo Championships, a USA Judo Senior E-Level point tournament, at Northglenn High School in Northglenn Colo. on Saturday.
The USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center took wins in seven of the 18 senior elite divisions, earning a total of 14 medals. Athletes from the Northglenn Judo Club also had a strong showing, winning eight medals, including four gold.
In the day's best match-up,
Josh O'Neil
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) was just eight seconds away from upsetting the #1 player in the 66kg division. O'Neil had scored a yuko (quarter-point) and a waza-ari (half-point) against top-ranked
Kenny Hashimoto
(Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo) with 15 seconds left in the match. After a brief break, Hashimoto attacked O'Neil quickly and threw him for ippon (instant win) with eight seconds remaining to win the final.
Landry Ambouroue
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) also nearly produced an upset in the 100kg division final. Fighting up from 90kg, Ambouroue threw 2006 National Champion
Djamal Aliev
(Greenwood Village, Colo.), his OTC teammate, for a waza-ari and a koka (smallest points) to take the lead in the match before Aliev caught him with a throw for ippon.
Grace Ohashi
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) and her OTC teammate
Anna Palmer
faced off in the 52kg final. Ohashi, the #4-ranked U.S. player in the division, brought her record against sixth-ranked Palmer to 3-0 when she threw Palmer and then pinned her for ippon (instant win) in the final.
Top-ranked
Alexa Liddie
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / 44kg) and Kirk Hoffmann (Security, Colo. / +100kg) also won their respective divisions.
Zach Maes
(Wheat Ridge, Colo. / Team FORCE), the top-ranked junior in the 55kg division, won his first senior elite point tournament on Saturday, with a win over
Ruben Martin
(Burleson, Texas / Ruben Martin Judo).
Christal Ransom
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center / 63kg) and
Stephanie Baim
(Dallas, Texas / Ruben Martin Judo) each continued comebacks as they establish themselves as athletes to watch heading into the Senior Nationals, April 20-21 in Miami, Fla.
Ransom, a two-time Senior National medalist at 57kg, retired just returned to elite competition earlier this year for the first time since 2004 and won her second tournament back in Northglenn, taking gold in the 63kg division.
Baim, a 1994 U.S. Open Champion in the 45kg division, returned to competition in 2005 after a nearly 10-year break, but soon found herself sidelined due to an injury at the Rendez-Vous Canada in September. Baim, who finished second at the Liberty Bell Classic in Philadelphia last week, won the 48kg division at Northglenn with another win over
Kayla Chappell
(Oklahoma City, Okla. / USA Stars) who Baim also defeated in Philadelphia. Baim first threw Chappell for a yuko score (quarter-point) and then ending the match with a sumi gaeshi (sacrifice throw).
