The factors that must be considered in providing parking for any Shopping Center should vary in degree according to the type of center, its location, its trade area characteristics and its tenants. That being said:
In GENERAL, parking must be:
A reasonable walking distance from parking to store. A straight driving lane of at least 100 feet at all important entrances of a large center. Arriving drivers can then avoid turns and will not block entrances. The lanes can also serve as stacking lanes for cars leaving the center.
Parking lots must circulation within the site. An outer perimeter and along the store fronts for pedestrians, automobiles, emergency vehicles and buses.
Use of bumpers or wheel stops should only be where unavoidable to ease cleaning and snow removal from parking. Lighting of parking areas must be standard of moderate height, with perimeter lights which might not disturb neighbors.
Exits parallel Entrances, but should be separated by median or planters. Landscaping to break up the sea of asphalt paving and to improve appearances. Width and angle should be determined by direction of movement and ease of parking.
Adequate storm drainage allowances; a 3 % grade assures good drainage into catch basins from parking lots. A high quality of surface and seal coat should be applied over a well-compacted subgrade.
Parking should meet individual tenant requirements.
