Show chiropractic your sore shoulder
Contributed by: DR. SEAN REIF D.C. on 5/24/2008

The normal shoulder is a biomechanical marvel consisting of not just one but four joints. Over 20 muscles are intricately coordinated to allow a great range of shoulder movements. The shoulder girdles attach the bones of the upper extremities to the axial skeleton. Each of the girdles consist of two bones: a clavicle (collarbone) and a scapula (shoulder blade). Although the shoulder joints are not very stable, they are freely movable and allow movement in many directions.

Shoulder pain has a high incidence. The most common cause is tendonitis, which can be effectively treated using massage, ice, stretch, and specific chiropractic adjustment procedures. Other causes of shoulder pain include rotator cuff strains, arthritis, or referred pain from internal organs, especially the heart or gallbladder. Commonly, shoulder pain is referred from the neck and may result from misalignments of vertebrae or from herniated discs that can pinch nerves exiting from the spine.

Doctors of chiropractic specialize in the conservative care of musculoskeletal conditions and are highly qualified in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder problems.
