Blog Entry 2 of 2 Art & Community
What is Art? As humans we tend to naturally crave an answer to the mysterious of life, hence the rise of philosophy. A great number of people have tried to clarify this mysterious three letter word from the great philosopher Plato to the American art critic Clement Greenberg's. In the Fall 2007 Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, by Thomas Adajan, “the definition of art is controversial… whether art can be defined has also been a matter of controversy.” Art has been defined for the purpose to communicate, entertain, express political change, socially inquire, propagandize, commercialize and as a means of psychological healing. Art has been sub-categorized into style, genre, elements and principles. The curse of this word has risen from the fact that artistic works have existed for thousands of years spawning our desire to make sense of arts importance and its manifesting change. What is Art? Art is composed of three letters to create a word, a spoken word, a signed word, a word so deep and complex in meaning that even the highest, most elite of philosophers and theorists can not define it. Yet, there is a definition, a clearly defined meaning of art. It lies within each individual, it is an order of thought, emotion and opinion. Art is what you make of , the definition of art lies within the individual. Different aspects of art will be addressed and discussed-including quotes and your opinions! Is art important? WHY?

Trash can art

I started a project, aligned with the art council, of trash can art. Have you seen the 7 trash cans in Parker painted by HS students? They represent 7 different world cultures. I am having a difficult time getting the local paper and Town of Parker to give credit (or publish info) about the students and organizations who designed and created these pieces of functional art. We want to design and paint more cans. The cost is about $100-$200 a trash can and creates quite a conversation piece as well as a fun GO GREEN theme! The trash cans are used and visible in the town of PARKER at the Parker Rec Center, Parker Field House and the Mainstreet Center.
