Blog Entry 18 of 38 How Swede It Is
Just another Parker Mom, you say. You're probably right. Same old story: Swedish girl comes to the US as an exchange student. Girl returns to Sweden. American boyfriend flies to Sweden and proposes. Swedish girl marries American boy. Moves to Parker. Have three kids. Isn't that a Parker Mom in a nutshell? Maybe that was a Minnesota mom? I am, however, the stereotype Swedish/American. I am a freakishly tall blonde who loves coffee, chocolate and a good story. Fact is as good to me as fiction--I guess I write faction. Not sure if I'm a blogger, but like the notion of others talking back to my opinions. It may take a load off for my other personalities. Who knows--I may become a serial blogger?

Charterizers from hell reserve seat for Merrifield

Did hell just freeze over? Speaker of the House, Terrence Carroll, appoints Mike Merrifield to continue at the helm of the House Education Committee.

With the infamous Merrifield authored email-- "there must be a special place in hell for those Privatizers, Charterizers, and Voucherizers! They deserve it!" --Merrifield had a seating arrangement in mind for pro-school choice supporter Rep. Carroll too.

In 2007 Carroll was outraged with Merrifield's unprofessional remarks and told the Rocky Mountain News that "Merrifield's comments reflected a larger agenda to gut charter schools."

Merrifield resigned his chairmanship for the remainder of the 2007 season and Carroll continued his advocacy for parental rights in education.

How quickly we forget.

Merrifield was reinstated as chairman of the committee in 2008 under the leadership of Andrew Romanoff. And now Mr. Charterizer Terrance Carroll himself has decided to keep Merrifield in this position.

It brings to mind a certain definition of insanity-- " Do not do the same thing over and over and expect a different result."

As a liberal conservative Carroll fan I am not sure if I should start with penning him a letter requesting an explanation, or churn out my disappointment to Merrifield by asking if he has switched religion to travel along in a handbasket?

I am stalking my news stations tonight in hopes of a personal appearance, explanation and redemption by Carroll.

I doubt Merrifield has the charisma to pull off a well written lipstick speech to gain support from those of us who vote pro-education. I hope he proves me wrong.

P.S. After a day of reflecting on my blog post I added this:

Dear Rep. Merrifield,
As someone who normally does not walk around with her knickers in a twist, I am extending this offer. I am baking cookies that read "Merrifield lacks charisma," "Merrifield is anti-charter," "Choosing Merrifield is a mistake."
Prove me wrong and make me eat my words. Please.
Since you have rep. Carroll's support there must be something fundamental I am missing.
I will even bake you cookies that read "charters from hell," and "education choice stinks," for you to enjoy at the same time.
I bring the cookies. You bring the milk. It's an open invitation.

Donnell, I am shoving my rose-colored goggles back on and hoping that the reason rep. Carroll kept rep. Merrifield in his post is some stealth charter-supporting mission that we do not know about. I am still waiting for a reply to my rather pointed email.

Karin, Thank you for highlighting this important news. As supporters of charter schools, we believe that choice and competition create a better educational environment for ALL students. I wish that Rep. Carroll would have stood by his long held principles and appointed someone different to this chairmanship.
