Let an acrostic enhance your creativity

Everyone's creative. No really.

And everyone is familiar with poetry.

It being National Poetry Month, I'm posting a different poetry prompt every Monday in April.

A poetry prompt helps you tap into the creative side of your brain. To warm up or try something else, feel free to play Poetry Poker.

This poetry prompt you're now reading focuses on the acrostic poem.
Caustic? Nah...! Acrostic

The basic acrostic is a poem where the first letters of each line form a word or phrase when read from top to bottom. Do you see the vertical word "our" in this acrostic?

Open your mind to the
Universe, and
Run back home and get your lunch.

Juan Lugo

Now, if you don't have a word or phrase in mind for your acrostic, choose one or more of these:

warm, cold, puppy, kitten, home, school, blanket, young and old

You can also use the name of your favorite tree, bird, color, vehicle or place.

General acrostic information and
acrostic poem from
The Teachers and Writers
Handbook of Poetic Forms

edited by Ron Padgett

Let yourself write without stopping for three minutes.

In The Teachers and Writers Handbook of Poetic Forms, Ron Padgett said "The acrostic is good for developing mental and verbal ability, especially when written at top speed. It is interesting to turn a word or phrase on its side and see what spills out."

If you'd like, please register so that you can post your poetry, whether it "spilled out" from this prompt or not.

The best poems, 20 lines or less, will be considered for our print sections in April. To be considered for our April 13 edition, please post your poem by Thursday, April 6.
