It was a dark and stormy night.
No, no. It was a cool and drizzly night, Aug. 26, as a reported 4,800 bicyclists came to the State Capitol to participate in the
14th Annual Kaiser Permanente Moonlight Classic 2006 Midnight City Bike Tour.
A mother and father cycled with their young daughter on a bicycle built for three. Women (and a couple of men) dressed up as fairies, some wearing sparkling wings, some donning striped stockings, perhaps in the hopes of winning a prize in the
Gonzo Outrageous Costume Contest. Elvis impersonator
Jeremy Dempsey, of Denver, also took to the drizzly city streets.
But it was Captain Obvious, a.k.a
Matt Armbruster, from Lakewood, of
www.BigWheelRally.com, who zigged and zagged at break-neck speed down the bike tour route, to the wild cheers of his fellow bicyclists.
Armbruster said it was his fourth year riding the Moonlight Classic on his big wheel bicycle. His friend
Peter Collins, from the United Kingdom, however, said he was in the fundraising event his first year.
The Moonlight Classic benefits
Seniors Inc.of Denver, which may be why first-timer
Landon Beste, of Denver, said, "It's a great experience, great people. Everyone's been as nice as can be."
Beste stopped at one of the Moonlight Classic's snack stops to grab himself a slice of watermelon. "I haven't ridden a bike in probably three-and-a-half years," he said. And his take on the watermelon? "Awesome."
