Clifford, beach theme make for cool book fair
Contributed by: Tabitha Dial/YourHub.com   on 4/12/2007

I've been to a lot of book stores in my life and when I stepped into the Mountain View Elementary book fair, I was amazed at how much the school library resembled what may have been the coolest place to purchase books that I have ever visited.

"Mountain View has over 600 students in grade Kindergarten through third. These students love to read. They are excited to learn. We need lots and lots of books to feed their appetite for reading," said Claire Shadow, Mountain View Elementary librarian.

Well, I'd be hungry for books, too, if I was a student at Shadow's school. Leslie Craw, co-chair of the book fair, said that the school holds book talks to get students excited about books that will be available for purchase. And Laura Welch, also a co-chair for the book fair, said that students get to come to the library during regular library hours and get to write down what they want on a wish list.

Jan Kerr, a gym teacher at Mountain View Elementary, is working on a library for students who are sick and can not participate in the book fair, Welch said.

"It's always well supported," said Shadow. "Our parents know that their support of the book fair is for books."

Parents build all the decorations for the book fair, too. And the decorationsjust add to the fun environment. I think most people think "book fair" and they have a vision of a room full of tables and a spattering of signs. But Mountain View Elementary has a vibrant book sale, with posters for sale on the walls, colorful paper sails hanging from the ceiling and display racks full of books and gift ideas.

Check out my photos and you will probably agree that the book fair at Mountain View Elementary is very, very cool. In fact, if you know of a cooler place to buy books, post your story and photos.

The Mountain View Elementary book fair continues April 12, 17 and 18, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m. Call 303-387-8675 for details.
