To recognize National Poetry Month, I'm posting a different poetry prompt each Monday in April. Feel free to see what I've done with Poetry Pokerand acrostic poetryand letters that masquerade as poems. You might also enjoy a very short form of poetry called the lune.

... or your mood is like the tide rolling over the shore.

Whatever your mood, try comparing it to something in nature. If you were a bird or rabbit or tree, how would you express how you really feel when you get quiet? Are you like a mother bird? A young rabbit? An old tree? Or something else...

Here is the poem that inspired this prompt. It is from Green Rice, a collection of poems by the Vietnamese poet Lam Thi My Da.

As Leaves

I look at the leaves
And think how sweet they might taste
So young and tender
The bright green leaves drive winter away
Oh, are my kisses like that?

I walk in a young season
Stunned, in the presence of leaves
The breath the land needs
Oh graceful leaves, from the depths of me

If I could draw my kisses on the sky
I would draw them as leaves
