Chaparral Wolverine baseball shots
Contributed by: Meagan Savage   on 7/27/2006

I guess the thing I love the most about taking pictures of the sport that is baseball is the dust. Really, I think it really makes the shot in a lot of cases. I was upset that I couldn't go to more home games this year ... two would have been nice.

I even considered being the baseball manager, too. Granted that's mostly because I had a friend on the team who said they needed a manager and if I were the manager, I might get one of those very cool baseball jackets the Varsity team wore. Unfortunately, due to a new job and rapidly-approaching AP exams, it didn't work out.

But, this game was very cool because I got to sit in the dugout and take pictures. It's hard to get pictures through that darn wire fence and you don't want to be right on top of it because then your lens will be scratched which would be the end of the world since it's not even your lens. So, deciding I was sick of taking pictures that had blurry fences in the upper corners, I began thinking of creative solutions.

Mr. Watkins had said to me earlier in the day (I think I asked him about the fence problem and what I should do about it or something ...) "If you were REALLY good, you'd sit on top of the dugout." Now, I'm not entirely sure if he was joking or not, but either way it sounded like a challenge.

There was construction going on in the general vicinity of the baseball fields so there was some equipment up against the dugout ... including a metal prop or something that wasn't a ladder but would have worked as one in a pinch. My only problem was that a golf cart holding administrative personnel was ten feet away. I was weeks away from graduation and didn't want to press my luck. Looking back, I should have just asked them if I could climb up there but that didn't occur to me at the time.

So, I ran into one of the guys I knew on the team (I guess "ran into" isn't the right term ... "WOW! What are the odds that you'd be here at you're OWN game!?" Not very smooth ...) and asked if he thought the coach would be mad if I got up on top of the dugout and he laughed and told me that I could come inside. I helped him out a lot in Spanish junior year, he owed me one.

Yes, pictures ... enjoy them :)

Nice photos. And a send off for Meagan/Fellowship of the Blogs get together would be great. Maybe we could grab hot dogs in downtown Denver one fine lunch time?

Action shots are hard to get and you have some good ones. I am particularly partial to close-ups(eg. Wade Johnson ?). In YourHub.com postings the thumbnails are small and closeups are doubly effective.
