Blog Entry 192 of 270 Average Joe. Not.
I was born, therefore I blog. I have a sense of the ridiculous and need an outlet for that. I can be serious too and love to write little stories about little known but important people and events. And I love wildlife and travel and will always try to share those experiences. I make things up (its called fiction) and am amused when readers are duped into believing they are true.

Purple pine cones
Contributed by: Joe McDaniel   on 9/10/2007

The Rocky Mountain Bristlecone pine trees (Pinus aristata) growing at Mt. Goliath Natural Area on the Mount Evans road are some of the oldest living organisms on earth. One tree in the area is an estimated 2,435 years old.

These unique specimens grow in the brutal conditions of the alpine tundra,at the tree line above 8,000 feet, and survive extreme drought, bitter cold and high winds with specially evolved adaptations.

Their gnarled and twisted shapes and colorful woodgrain patterns offer photographers many opportunities for capturing unique images of nature. These photos were taken on September 8th on the road from Echo Lake to Summit Lake.
