DAR gives out awards to young writers
Contributed by: Tabitha Dial, YourHub.com   on 2/18/2007

I was able to attend the Daughters of the American Revolution's annual awards meeting Feb. 17 at the Franktown Fire Department. DAR gave out awards for their Junior American Citizens essay contest and their DAR American History essay contest. Writers composed essays on the theme of Jamestown settlement: An American beginning.

I spent most of my time before the ceremony talking to Kathyrn Byczkowski and her family. Kathryn, who won third place in the DAR American History essay contest,is in sixth grade at Northeast Elementary and is in the gifted and talented program. She is 12 years old and she and her 13-year-old brother, John William Byczkowski, both love math.

After visiting Jamestown with their family last October, the Byczkowskis said they would like to travel to New England each fall.

"I think it resparked all of our interest in history," said their mother, Amy Byczkowski.

Essays were judged on historical accuracy, adherence to subject, organization of materials, originality, interest, spelling and punctuation, grammar and bibliography.

Winning writers Rebecca Zunker, Autumn Ruch, Isaiah Struve, Aaron Raper, Maci Hass and Emily Fluhr, all Trinity Lutheran School students, could not make the event.

Yes. There were some very cool people at this event and it was nice to be among people recognized for their writing.

Cool event! It would've been great if it'd been scheduled so more of the winners could attend. But, nonetheless, it's good to know people younger than me are pursuing excellence in writing.
