Blog Entry 217 of 264 Average Joe. Not.
I was born, therefore I blog. I have a sense of the ridiculous and need an outlet for that. I can be serious too and love to write little stories about little known but important people and events. And I love wildlife and travel and will always try to share those experiences. I make things up (its called fiction) and am amused when readers are duped into believing they are true.

Tree House Teens making their mark
Contributed by: Joe McDaniel   on 12/1/2007

Tree House Teens is a fledgling group of enthusiastic Parker area teenagers who meet every Monday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Briargate-on-Main Recreation Room.

Founded by Vicki Robbins (CEO) with support from Nikki Beckford (CFO & educator), their meetings and activities provide a supportive environment for teenagers and give members opportunities to openly discuss "tough topics," make friends, and share new life experiences. The group's four officers meet monthly to set goals and review progress.

To raise money Tree House Teen members have been painting the windows of local Parker businesses with festive decorations. Businesses that have supported Tree House Teens include Guadalajara Restaurant, Dr. Clint Morrow Chiropractic and 8-Track (Skate Boards), whose windows have been brightened for the Holiday Season with Christmas themes. (See photos.)

They will soon be selling skin-care products by Arbonne Cosmetics, made possible by the support of UPS, and Xs Energy drinks. These projects are organized by members and give each one a chance to bond with others and tackle real-life challenges.

Vice President Justin Hall was introduced to THT by a good friend and after only one meeting he was hooked. He enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere which allowed him to be totally honest about himself and to air his opinions; something, he adds, "... many of us don't have the opportunity to do."

Alex Lee went to his first meeting at the instigation of his tutor Nikki Beckford and there were only two teens present. He thought about quitting but persisted, and now says he is really glad he stayed, made new friends and started their first fundraiser. He is one of the officers, serving as treasurer.

Justin and Alex are clearly excited about Tree House Teens and are amazed to be having so much progress in a relatively short few months of their existence. Both want to see growth in membership, from the present eight, and welcome "new faces." They acknowledge enthusiastically the dedication and support of co-founder Vicky Robbins and Nikki Beckford.

Anyone wanting more information about Tree House Teens is encouraged to call 303-805-9631. Business owners who can offer support and might want to have their windows decorated for the Holidays (!) can call the same number. A new website is expected to be starting up by December 15th.

I hope this group is still around when I have three teenage boys. As well as they currently "decorate" my house with their various "art projects", I'm sure they would be master window painters!

I like the idea of giving teens somewhere to talk and something to do. I also have fond memories of going downtown (Minneapolis) to see decorated department store windows as an annual holiday event.

Having raised teens in Parker I know how badly anything that benefits teens has been needed in this town. Great idea!
