As I stood in the checkout line at Safeway recently with my three boys (A six year old, intent on the acquisition of peanut butter cups, and the crying twin 6 month olds) I was asked by the (idiot) woman in line behind me if we were going to "try for a girl".
URGH!!!! My reply? Of course, it was a polite "No, when they start coming in pairs, I'm pretty much done!" said with an entirely fake but sweet, motherly (I hope!) smile. But the "What the @#$% do you think?!?!?" response was lurking in my head, I assure you. And, it got me thinking....
As the twins' conception was of the "natural" variety (i.e. no drug therapy or IVF treatments, just a couple of ingredients we threw together at home one night after a decent bottle of wine) to say that we were shocked about our multiple pregnancy would be a gross understatement.
I believe my husband's first words after the ultrasound technician's announcement of "Well, there's Baby A and, oh, look! There's Baby B!" were (and I am directly quoting here, people!) "I need a scotch." It was 10:30 in the morning.
Fast forward seven months and we have two beautiful and identical baby boys who were born at term and six plus pounds each with nary a minute spent in the NICU. My life will never be the same. (My stomach will never be the same either. The term "stretch marks" doesn't accurately describe the soft, fleshy, accordion-esque nature of my mid-region. Sigh.)
But I know that I will never have another child. Or at least I will never be PREGNANT with another. Less than two months after the twins were born my husband went in to the doctor for a little procedure I like to call "Snippity Do-Dah".
And I, for one, am more than okay with that fact. To live among these little male creatures who are so different, not only physically, from myself is, in a word, fascinating. I may not have testes, folks, but I
did grow three sets of the things!! And I now have the perfect excuse for everything that doesn't go my way. I just blame it on all the Y-chromosomes around here!
And at least the dog is a girl!
