Blog Entry 53 of 194 Dial 'T' for Tabitha
I'm a bicycling poet who lived in Parker for several years and worked at YourHub.com, covering Parker and Franktown for two years.

I am studying poetry at CSU in the Master of Fine Arts program ...

I hope you can post a comment or two and that you will enjoy my blogs.

The luckiness of being
Contributed by: Tabitha Dial, YourHub.com   on 5/9/2006

Most people consider themselves lucky to have one or a few things...

I have a million things I'm lucky for. One of them is my boyfriend, Alex.

He's ushered me in to the world of wheels. Bicycle wheels, that is.

Now that I think of it, I've got to thank his mother, Ruth, for letting me use her bicycle for several months with Alex. By getting to cruise around on it with his guidance, I've learned that I like getting around on a bike and what sort of qualities I want in my own.

Now, on Saturday night, Alex and I went on a bike ride. On the way home, my wallet fell from my jacket and I stopped to retrieve it from the bike trail.

Little did we realize I was leaving behind my sunglasses in the grass!

The next morning, as we prepared for our trip to REI for their anniversary sale, and hopefully my new bicycle, my sunglasses were not to be found. Soon we determined their location must have been on that trail.

Good thing that trail took us to REI. We set off with substitute sunglasses. Behind me, Alex carefully stopped and looked in the grass and found them for me at the wallet-drop spot, though I had gone on.

That's pretty lucky.

But luckier still, is my very own bicycle acquisition. I've wanted to have my own bike to take to work and back on days when I'm just in the newsroom.

I foundone I loved Saturday-- the Electra Townie 21-- but decided I wanted to shop around a little more before I brought out the credit card.

Unfortunately, that bike sold.

Sold well.

You can't even order it on the REI Web site, which means distribution can't order it and that could be another month's wait for me, the consumer.

I found this out on Sunday and on Monday, I called front range REI stores to see if they had one. Lakewood had the other Townies, but not the one with my coveted 21 gears.

Then, Englewoodcame to my rescue. Could they hold the bike?

No, because it's a sale item.

But I had taken Ruth's bike to work for the first time that morning. It had taken me about a half hour less than I thought. So guess who got to leave work early?

Me.

Alex picked me up and we went straight to the store and just when things looked grim and we didn't see my sought-after wheels and our bike clerk thought it wasn't there, Alex wandered to the other side of the bikes displayed and-- BAM! There she was.

And soon she came home.

Thank goodness for Alex.

Those extra eyeballs help. But more than that, he thinks about and tends to details I just don't care about. Maybe it's because he was born on the cusp of Virgo, which is very detail-oriented. Maybe it's because he's a pilot, who has to be thorough for safety.

But whatever it is, this Pisces-born poet is very grateful to have his company, knowledge and patient persistence.

Ha ha ha. Thanks, Brendan. So far I've noticed they cost $0 to park too. Zero traffic jams appear to be the order of the day, as well...

Welcome to the world of "alternative" transportation. Bikes get $0 per gallon and use only 0 gallons per mile.
