Blog Entry 10 of 45 A view from The Hill
Hi, I'm Joey Kirchmer, author of this blog and a community journalist at YourHub.com. I live at the intersection of 13th and Washington, smack dab in the middle of Capitol Hill. Old School Burgers pretty mediocre
Contributed by: Joseph Kirchmer/YourHub.com   on 4/11/2007

Well, I sit down again for another review and yet again, I've dined at another burger joint that claims to be the first and seemingly only restaurant in the metro area that serves fresh food.

Old School Burgers, located at 18695 E. Stage Run Road in Parker, makes it crystal clear from the moment you walk in that your food is prepared the moment you order.

Don't get me wrong -- I enjoy fresh food as much as the next guy. But seriously, food prepared to order is kind of expected if you're going somewhere besides Wendy's or McDonald's.

Click here for a hilarious McDonald's song.

I sauntered into Old School Burgers and decided to order the "Single Meal," a cheeseburger, fries and 20 oz. soda (diet Dr. Pepper), all for a pretty reasonable price of $5.18.

But when I ordered it, the employee at the cash register said, "Just so you know, the single is the same size as the burger you get in the kid's meal."

I immediately felt like my manhood had just been put into question.

"I'm a grown man," I said to myself. "Surely, the double is the better choice for me. I can't be keeping company with those weak kids meals."

So I hastily bumped up my order to the double but then I thought, wait, I really don't need to consume a double cheeseburger today -- or really any day for that matter. So I changed my order back to the single.

And then I thought, why would they make the single and the kid's hamburger the same size? If it's the same size, why wouldn't I just order the kids meal instead?

It's a dollar cheaper and on my salary, that makes a difference. Sadly, it actually makes a pretty big difference.

Anyway, the employee made it sound like my hamburger was going to be a wafer-thin, silver dollar-sized burger but it ended up being pretty decent sized. Doubling up would have only doubled the amount of calories, fat and cholesterol and left me with a serious case of cheeseburger regret.

There's also a "Quad," which as you might have guessed is four beef patties and four slices of cheese. I really hope no one ever eats that much burger and cheese and bun in one sitting.

The single was good. You can get your onions grilled or raw (I don't know who would go with raw when presented the option) and there's a tasty "house spread" that has a nice subtle, sweet flavor.

The fries were pretty bad though. Apparently, they peel their own potatoes here, which is nice, but they were way overcooked. To their credit though, they use cholesterol-free frying oil, a definite plus.

I'm considering eliminating French fries altogether from my diet. They're terrible for you, I've learned. So are potato chips, but that's another story.

Here's a quick piece of useless trivia: an order of large fries at McDonald's actually has more fat and calories than a Big Mac.

Large fries: 570 calories, 30 grams of fat
Big Mac: 540 calories, 29 grams of fat

The caveat is that the Big Mac has far more heart-clogging cholesterol.

Final thought: I'm obviously obsessed with McDonald's.

What was "Old School" about them? The atmosphere? The way they prepare their food? I cry every time I get food from McDonald's. Seriously.

I also can't believe that I said "your" instead of "you're." Guess it's a good thing I'm leaving.

At the minimum stating "our regular burger is the one that is in a kids' meal" is tacky. It is an upsell tactic gone bad! I love Old School burgers, by the way. Great review.

WEAK kids meals? I love kids meals. They are fun. I'm going to try to order one next time I have the chance. And yeah, you ARE obsessed with McDonald's.

Cheeseburger regret. That would be a sweet name for a band. Also, I cannot believe your cutting french fries out of your diet. Just the thought of never tasting their salty goodness again makes me tear up. One more thing. How many Big Macs can you put away in one sitting?
