Blog Entry 9 of 14 The Shady Nook Cafe - The Middle of America
The Shady Nook Cafe was located inside the Shady Nook Truck Stop, just west of Kearney, Nebraska near the 1733 Ranch and the 1733 mile marker for the Lincoln Highway. The middle of America was first located at the half-way point between Boston and San Francisco along the Lincoln Highway - the first trans-American highway. The Shady Nook Cafe was 1733 miles from Boston and 1733 miles from San Francisco. Most political pundits aspire to pander their comments to the extremes of the various political parties, thinking the left-wingers and the right-wingers held the keys to nominations, and thus the political power base. However, this thinking has left America damaged from the division and political rhetoric of the extremists, while Middle America has been ignored and excluded from debates over political issues and governmental policy. Candidates who obtain their party's nominations pander to those extremes, only to suffer from whiplash in trying to then court the Middle of America - which really determines the winner of each Presidential election. This blog will attempt to address political topics from the rational middle, where common sense, rational thought, and concerns about "doing the right thing" for the "best interest of the country" dominate over pandering to special interests, Euro-centric liberalism, the religious extremes, or the liberal dominated mass media. Come in to the Shady Nook Cafe, get a cup of coffee, and let's chat about America - from the Middle.

McCain Goes To Washington
Contributed by: Kory Nelson   on 9/26/2008

Whether or not the 1st scheduled Presidential Debate occurs tonight, I am interested in how the liberal media is putting their own spin on this week's developments regarding Senator McCain's decision to suspend his campaign, travel to Washington, and his request to postpone the debate. What does McCain's decision reveal about his character? What does Obama's decisions reveal about his character?

1. McCain Decision to Return to Washington

Senator McCain's decision to return to Washington to address the country's economic situation has been lauded by Republicans and cast as a political stunt by the liberal media. As this whole situation is political, the liberal media's spin on this has focused on some the Democrat Congressional leaderships statement about how they already a Congressional deal worked out, McCain was not "needed", and how his appearance would only cause unneeded distractions to the process. Well, as it turns out, no such "deal" existed. Furthermore, as McCain is the new leader of the Republican Party, how can his involvement not help solidify any Republican congressional position as to any deal?

The Democrats have the majority in Congress. They can pass any reform and bailout package they desire without the Republicans agreeing to it. So.....why don't they? It's clear they don't want to go down that road alone - in case it doesn't work. The best phrase I've heard yet is "they don't want to go over the cliff without taking the Republicans with them".

The last I checked, McCain still is a sitting Senator from Arizona. His vote on this package still counts - right? So why wouldn't his presence in Washington at such a critical time not be considered to help reach a final decision/vote? Wouldn't it be logical to conclude that it would be members of Congress who are not in Washington who would be viewed more of a hinderence to a final solution?

I've seen many negative campaign ads that highlighted an incumbent's voting record, highlighting when they weren't present to even cast a vote. So it seems the common consensus is that an elected representative to Congress should be in Washington at times where important decisions are trying to be reached for legislation to be passed by Congress.

2. Obama's Initial Decision to Not Return to Washington

Obama's statements to the media were interesting, stating that "if" he could be of any assistance, he would help. Has he been paying attention to what is going on? Why wouldn't he think his presence in Washington would not be important? I've heard the spin by the liberal media regarding how a President should be able to "multi-task", using modern communication technology to get things done from a distance, so that his presence is not absolutely necessary in the time of a crisis.

Ah, wait a minute..... Isn't this the same liberal media who, for years now, have absolutely ripped President Bush for his "failure to act" when he first heard the news of the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001, as he continued his event at that local school, reading childrens' books to the kids? Another double standard, it would seem. Personally, Obama's decision to stay on the campaign trail at this time, until President Bush invited him to the White House, does speak towards his judgment - just poorly.

3. McCain's Decision to Suspend Campaign Activity

I truly believe that the overwhelming majority of Americans are sick and tired of the "Do Nothing Congress" and the political sniping that seems to prevent Congress' work for the American people from getting done. I believe most Americans want leadership and government of which they can be proud. McCain's decision is not some isolated political stunt, but appears to be consistent with his past behavior of doing the politically inconvenient thing in order to put the work for the American people first. I've heard the phrase, "Why can't we put politics aside and get the job done?" Well, isn't that exactly what McCain was doing? I think so.

4. Obama's Decision to Not Return to Washington

After McCain announced that he was returning to Washington, Obama stated that he was not going to do so. What does that say in this time of crisis? Was not Obama "in touch" with the Democrat leadership of Congress? I simply don't understand his thinking, especially given the lead time he had to respond to McCain's decision. His judgment on this just seems lacking to me.

5. Obama's Rejection of McCain's Request to Postpone Debate

Obama's opinion that the Presidential Debate should continue is also interesting as to the insight into his judgment. He stated that he thought this was exactly the time that the American people wanted to hear from their future President as to their thoughts, etc. Well, if the Presidential candidates were both not member of Congress, there might be little for them to do, so I could see his point; however, I believe the American people are more interested in getting the country's leaders to work out "the best solution possible" to this crisis on the best possible timeline.

Look, I admit I'm no economics wiz. I don't understand a lot about what is going on. I don't know how critical it is for "something" to get done by Congress over this weekend as compared to by the middle of next week, as compared to the following week. I don't know how much time can be afforded to fine tune a solution, or if a series of actions can be developed, with only the absolute necessities being implemented first, followed by a series of actions with more detailed analysis and considered consensus obtained. But I do know that the highest priority should be to stabilize the economy through action, and not through a political debate.

As the topic of this debate was going to be foreign policy, I found it more of a political "stunt" that Obama openly stated that he was going to inject the economic situation into the debate as a result of his "philosophy" that American "can't be strong overseas unless we are strong at home". Wow - really? Foreign policy dependant upon national economic soundness? The phrase sounds nice, but these topics are so different in reality that this political two-step needs a snare drum ending.

6. Obama's Rejection of McCain's Request for 10 Town Hall Meetings

I hope every American who hasn't solidified their viewpoint on these two candidates closely examines the lost opportunity to hear them at 10 different town hall meetings, as suggested over and over again by Senator McCain. Why won't Obama agree to that? If McCain doesn't appear in Mississippi tonight, why will the media be focusing more on this one "failure to appear", as compared to Obama's ten?

I submit, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, that America's needs and desires for competent leadership of which we can be proud in their willingness to take decisive action in the best interest of America, without waiting for the latest trends in polling data, to "reach across the aisle" for solutions to America's toughest problems clearly calls for the selection of a President who recognizes the need to focus on a single-issue crisis, the need to be present with other government officials to effectively lead them through problem solving to a consensus. The Blackberry wielding corporate executive may be able to accomplish much from a remote location - but America isn't a business with only one CEO. We need a President, not a lawyer. We need a leader, not a debater. We need solutions through action, not a law school professor to pontificate on top of an ivory tower. We need John McCain.

Kory, No mention of how the 'right wing' media will cover it, Kory? I imagine you get the majority of your information from Sean Hannity on Faux News from your typical right wing sheeple views. It is beyond disgusting (and criminal) how Sean Hannity and the the McCain campaign are trying to cast suspicion on Obama as a "terrorist" or one who "palls around with terrorists." It shows their desperation as they are going down in a sinking ship like the Titanic. They feel they can only win by creating hatred, suspicion and divisiveness --things the American public does NOT want anymore in the White House. If something were to happen to Obama due to these Nazi-like rallies where the voters are getting whipped up into hate-filled frenzies so much as they are not calling for the assassination of Senator Barack Obama, the blood will be on the hands of the McCain campaign and Faux News.
