Blog Entry 57 of 194 Dial 'T' for Tabitha
I'm a bicycling poet who lived in Parker for several years and worked at YourHub.com, covering Parker and Franktown for two years.

I am studying poetry at CSU in the Master of Fine Arts program ...

Web clip Wednesday: Super Mario Live
Contributed by: Tabitha Dial, YourHub.com   on 5/17/2006

Insomniacs sometimes have all the fun. Which is why I'm glad my boyfriend, Alex, had a bout of insomnia last weekend, when he found some fun films on the Web.

One of my favorites is a clip of Super Mario Live.

I laugh every time I see it. It's a live version of the first level of Super Mario Brothers, the Nintendo game first produced in 1985, when I was just 5 (I didn't dare play the game for years because I hated the thought that Mario and Luigi DIE. I couldn't have their pixelated blood on my hands).

I'd tell you my favorite part of the clip, but I don't want to spoil anything. When you view it, I hope you'll tell me your own favorite part in the comments box below.

Be warned: I've had the Super Mario Brothers' theme song in my head for almost three days now and the other night Alex and I had to play some Super Mario. If you don't want that wonderful little ditty dancing in your brain and you don't have access to the Super Mario Brothers game, you may choose not to view this clip.

It's in your hands.

FYI: Wikipediaclaims that at one time, Mario was recognized by American children more than Mickey Mouse. Amazing. I know I'd rather go to a Mario land amusement park moreso than Disney Land.
I want my picture taken with Bowser.

Who's your favorite Super Mario Brothers character? Princess? Bowser? Luigi? Mario?

Two days since I've posted this and 1) I had to return to open the Web clip so I could hear the song because it's been in my head again, driving me crazy and 2) I still can't decide if the koopas are my favorite Mario Brother's character or if it's Princess, but only the Mario Brothers Two Princess. I really really really hate her in Mario Kart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldFCBpTwEGI - Talk about getting songs stuck in your head. Here is a college choir that sings an acapella medley of a lot of the old NES theme songs.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=w4Zj9BGraVU&search=punch%20out%20live - and here's a link toa great live action Punch Out. As to my favorite Mario guy... wow it's hard to beat Eric's choice of Bullet Bill. Not that this is a competition or anything. I just forgot how much I really liked The Bills. But for me, my favorites were the Bob-Ombs and Chain Chomps of Super Mario 3. I guess I like the idea of something horrendously dangerous packed in a tiny little ball.

That clip ruled. I can't out-nerd Eric. I, of course, liked the princess and it was rare I actually made it to her rescue.

I'm going to get all super-nerdy on you here, but my favorite tertiary Mario character is Bullet Bill and his giant cousin from the SNES version of Mario, Banzai Bill. They exist for no other reason than to fly in straight lines across the screen, leaving a trail of horrible destruction in their path. If you consider how slowly they move, their destructive capacity is even more impressive. Honorable mention: Birdo, the weird purple dinosaur from Mario 2 that inexplicably shoots eggs out of its perfectly round muzzle.
