Discussion, tips, tricks and tidbits for citizen journalists. As a former newspaper reporter/editor and now serving as the head coach in charge of training for the National Association of Citizen Journalists, I am passionate about educating citizen journalists. I will share writing tips, interview techniques and other skills that will help citizen journalists cover their communities. I also will blog about the future of the news business. When all is said and done, I believe citizen journalists will be key in helping to save the news industry. I think the NACJ will be instrumental in leading them on their way to success. Thoughts from a newspaper junkie

After being snowed in for the last couple of days, I am going through serious newspaper withdrawal. We live out in the country and the newspaper carriers couldn't get through the snow to deliver our newspaper Thursday and Friday.

It's really hard to go two days without a newspaper - if you are a newspaper junkie like me. Sure I listened to the radio and TV news, but it's not the same. TV and radio can only give you a snippet of what would be included in a newspaper article.

On the upside, though, it was fun to watch the local TV newscasts as they showed reports sent in by viewers on the scene of weather incidents. It was a lot of fun to watch as one viewer interviewed some motorists who slid off the highway and got stuck in the snow.

I liked seeing the appreciation the professional journalists showed as they aired the citizen journalists' reports. They appreciated having information from people on the scene. Professional journalists can't be everywhere. And, when you have a snow event like Denver had this week, it truly is fabulous and informative to have reports from citizens throughout the metro area.

I know how you feel about the paper-I'm an addict. My dogs couldn't find it under the snow on Thursday, but my neighbor was kind enough to use his snowblower later in the day and found it-yeah!! I love my paper, and a snowy day demands the crossword puzzle too!
