Last week, Joyce Christianson, of Parker, asked Dot:
What will happen to the strip mall at Lincoln and Parker Roads when the new Super Target is built further south and, perhaps, the Albertson's store is closed later this summer? Any chance we can get a Whole Foods or similar upscale grocery store in either location within the same strip mall?
Well, Joyce, it’s too early yet to clean your cupboards to make room for groceries from Whole Foods just yet- you’ve got ample time to find recipes you might want to try from ingredients bought at upscale grocers.
Benjamin Snow, executive director for the Parker Economic Development Council, told me it’s anyone’s guess right now what businesses will move in to the retail spaces soon up for grabs at Lincoln Avenue and Parker Road because different types of businesses have been courting that area.
If a retailer like Whole Foods announced that they chose a location, the new store wouldn’t open until about a year later, pending the approval of the town of Parker, local water and fire districts and construction time, according to Snow.
Whole Foods did not respond to my questions on behalf of Joyce about possibly coming to Parker by our deadline, but a similar grocery chain, Wild Oats, did reply.
"With the changes going on at Albertson's, there could be some potential new opportunities that were previously unavailable," said Erika Aberle, real estate market analyst for Wild Oats. She told me that Wild Oats is keeping their eye on Parker. They are aware of the Target site and actively looking at several sites in the area, she said.
Snow said there are certain classifications of retailers that the PEDC wants to have in Parker, such as an electronics retailer or a big books store and then a specialty grocer like Whole Foods, Wild Oats or Trader Joe’s.
Trader Joe’s has no locations in Colorado. Wild Oats has 14 stores in the state and Whole Foods has 7, including one in Highlands Ranch.
The Target at Lincoln Avenue and Parker Road will be closing this October, when the Super Target under construction west of the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Twenty Mile Road opens.
