Newland Communities partners with Chaparral High
Contributed by: The Bawmann Group on 5/9/2007

Newland Communities has recently partnered with Chaparral High School to create a sculpture for Stonegate, one of the premier living communities in Parker.

Students from the advanced sculpture class were invited to participate in a competition to create an original concept for a sculpture that will help landscape the community.

The class was divided into teams and the students were given certain guidelines to help shape their creative ideas and concepts. Newland Communities headed up the project with Chaparral's art teacher, Alicia Conrad, to help direct the students with their projects.

"We really wanted to get the community involved in a project for Stonegate," said Jennifer Donlan, marketing director for Newland Communities. "Since Chaparral is such an integral part of the Stonegate family, we were thrilled that the school responded so positively when we approached them."

Conrad was impressed that Newland Communities reached out to the local community for help. "What an amazing experience to have my students participate in an actual site-specific sculpture proposal," Conrad said. "Not to mention the delight of actually seeing a sculpture in our community that was designed by CHS students. It is an amazing advocacy for the arts."

Once the project concepts were completed, each of the teams were judged on originality, medium and style as well as their ability to capture the ideals of Stonegate. The judging panel consisted of representatives from Newland Communities, community residents, Sandi Cliver and Joanne Faul, and the assistant principal of Chaparral, Karl Smith. According to Smith, selecting a winner wasn't easy.

"What made choosing one conceptual model over the others difficult was the fact that all concepts satisfied the original requirements set down by the Newland Communities," said Smith. "The students involved were very impressive and their creativity, ingenuity, and understanding with regards to the task at hand was remarkable."

The winning team, partners Roberto Carlos Luna Sanchez and Lauren Christine Lucero, created a concept that delighted the judging panel. The team said they wanted to create a piece of art that would capture the essence of Stonegate-a sense of community.

According to the winners, the concept of the sculpture reflects Stonegate as a diverse community. The sculpture concept resembles a circling of leaves of different shapes and colors, which represent the variety of people and activities that exist within Stonegate. The artistic poles that hold up the leaves reflect the stability that the community brings to so many families within its boundaries.

"Winning the concept for the sculpture gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I am proud that my name and concept will be a permanent fixture in Parker," said Sanchez. "Working with a partner, creating a concept for a site-specific concept and, of course, winning were all my favorite parts of the project!"

The sculpture, which is scheduled to be installed in the fall, will be located at the east entrance of Market Green near the Highlands and Stonegate and Park Guell neighborhoods.

Stonegate is comprised of more than 50 acres of parks and open space. Residents of Stonegate will find playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, trails and playing fields throughout the community, capturing the essence of Rocky Mountain Living. Conveniently located, Stonegate is only minutes away from popular retailers, grocers, restaurants, medical facilities and business offices.
