Alphabet quilts on display
Contributed by: Marilyn Huffman on 8/22/2006

A collection of quilts made by the Material Girls quilt group is on display at the Parker Library on Mainstreet. Each of the quilts represents one of the 26 letters of the alphabet.

The inspriration for the project came from Theresa Fleming, a member of the group. The theme of alphabet quilts was inspired by a large photo poster that she has. Theresa asked those who were participating to make a 16-inch-by-20-inch quilt with the assigned letter visible and recognizable. There were no other color, design or construction limitations. Each quilter interpreted the assignment using her own imagination, creativity and preferances.

Member Sharon Thompson madetwo quilts for the exhibit. Sharon enjoyed the "challenge of making a quilt interesting to the little patrons of the library." One of her quilts features Larry the Leapin Lizard and Leo the Lion for the "L" quilt. Sharon used bright colors, movement and a three-dimensional aspect in both of her quilts. Beverly Finamore used ice cream cones with photo transfers of her grandkids for her "I" quilt. Eve Hanke patchworked a house for the "H" quilt and Jennifer Smith appliqued an Airplane for the "A" quilt .

The Material Girls quilt group of Parker is composed of 35 women of all skill levels who get together for fun, friendship and to share talents and techniques with each other.

Cindy Bush
has been the leader of the group since 2005. When Theresa approched her with the proposal to make the alphabet quilts, she thought it was a "great idea" and was happy that so many of the members were eager to participate. Theresa and Cindy were glad that the group was contributing something to the library where they meet twice a month.

Ellen Morris, the library program liaison assistant was pleased the have the quilts on display and coordinated the hanging of the quilts with Theresa. The Material Girls are proud of their display and hope that many enjoy seeing them.

Marilyn Huffman has been quilting since 1999 and joined the Material Girls shortly after moving to the Parker area in 2001. She made the "O" quilt for the exhibit that features oranges and Ohio Stars
