On Thursday, while Senator Barack Obama was speaking in Virginia with Governor Tim Kaine, made a desperate attempt to engage in class warfare by attacking Senator John McCain and his wife, Cindy, for owning 4 different homes. Obama said that there was a "fundamental gap of understanding" between McCain's world and "what people are going through every single day here in America."
Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh raised the question as to whether it was really wise for Senator Obama to raise this topic, as Obama was ripe for the same criticism, and re-raised the scandal over Obama's own Chicago mansion.
The Chicago Sun Time's staff reporter Tim Novak exposed the Obama house scandal in April of 2007: In 2005, Harvard law school graduate Senator Obama bought a mansion on the South Side of Chicago for
$1,600,000.00 (that's 1.6
million dollars folks), in the Kenwood neighborhood, from a doctor. On the same day, the wife of Tony Rezko - Chicago Slumlord, Obama financial supporter and convicted felon, Rita Rezko, bought the vacant lot next door to the Obamas from the same seller. The doctor had listed the properties for sale together. He sold the house to Obama for $300,000 below the asking price. The doctor got his asking price on the lot from Rezko's wife. Rita Rezko sold a strip of that vacant lot to Obama for $104,500 -- a deal Obama later apologized for, acknowledging that people might think he got a favor from Rezko. Obama called the episode "boneheaded'' and a "mistake.'' At the time Obama bought that strip of land, it had been reported that Rezko was under federal investigation for influence-peddling involving the administration of Illinois Governor Rod R. Blagojevich, whose campaign also received Rezko's financial support.
After returning from his one-week vacation in Hawaii, I contend that most people are unable to breach that gap between their lives and the life of
Obama - multimillion dollar mansions on large parcels obtained with the help of sleazy political financial supporters, Hawaii, etc. However, I also contend that Americans do not appreciate Obama's recent attempts to engage in class warfare. This is not a battle between classes - but one of ideology and character. Obama's latest dance in the muddy gutter is "Politics As Usual", not what he promised for this campaign...shame!
