OMG the BOE

Every time I think about the current Board of Education election, I get this vision of Saturday Night Live. Seth Meyers is doing the Weekend Update and it is the extremely sarcastic, " Really?" segment of the news. So... Doug Benevento, you want to be on the Board of Education because Douglas County School District hates boy scouts? Really??? Meghann Silverthorn, aerospace engineer who has zero experience with Douglas County schools believes she is the candidate for the job. Her passion to run comes from not wanting to support the schools with her tax money. Really Meghann?? No kids, no connection to the neighborhood schools makes you the best candidate... really??

If I was directing this segment of SNL this is where I would flash a picture of Dan Gerken except that the picture would be missing just like Dan has been missing at most, if not all of the candidate forums. Really Dan?? Too busy to run but not too busy to serve - really??

John Carson is the only one of this "conservative crew" savvy enough to fool you. He can definitely talk the talk. His walk, however, only supports the charter schools and their very well funded movement. Douglas County School District already offers more choices for education than most school districts in the country. He speaks as though he cares about what is best for all the children in our district, but his voting record clearly shows his charter school expansion movement agenda. You almost fooled us John but not really.

I am a Republican who is so very disappointed that John Ransom, chairman of the Douglas County Republican Party, chose to take this crazy conservative crusade on as a political assignment. This is not a Republican vs. Democrat election. It is not Conservative vs. Union. The folks who serve on the Board of Education should be fiscally responsible with a passion for their neighborhood, the children who live there and the education of those children. Those are the reasons I voted for Kristine Turner, Kevin Leung, Sue Catterall and Emily Hansen - 2 Republicans and 2 Democrats - just in case, anyone is counting.
