Austin's favorite Gary story
Contributed by: Sylvia Plumery on 10/30/2007

There are so many "Gary" stories that I have shared with family and friends these past years. My grandson, Austin, loves hearing the stories, and asks me to tell them over and over again.

Who is Gary? Gary is my second born son, who was born with Down Syndrome, and passed away on December 9, 2000. Gary had a very unique personality and a special gift of bringing laughter to everyone.

Austin told me that his favorite "Gary" story was when Gary was 8 years old, and we were living in Davenport, Iowa. Gary participated in a swim meet that year, and they let him swim with the 5 year old boys.

Before the race, two of the five year old boys came up to me and said that they were going to let Gary win the race. I told them that they should swim as fast as they could, because Gary didn't need to win - he just enjoyed participating and winning a ribbon.

During the race, Gary heard all of the parents cheering for their children, and Gary stopped and shouted "Hey, you guys, Cheer for Me!" He then continued on with the race, stopped again and shouted "Mom, do I get potato chips when I'm done?"

Needless to say, Gary brought so much laughter to all, and it was one of the most fun swim meets ever. By the way, Gary won the fifth place ribbon out of five swimmers, and he was delighted!

The Gary Plumery Foundation was founded in 2000, after Gary's passing. The mission of the foundation is to help people with developmental disabilities live a better, more fulfilling life by providing them with social activities, sporting events and community involvement projects.

The foundation has partnered with Developmental Pathways to reach the people we are trying to help. The foundation is currently doing a Christmas Wish List for the clients at Developmental Pathways. If you wish to purchase a gift for a client from the wish list, or wish to make a donation to purchase a gift for a client, you can call Rich Plumery at 303-471-0549 or Sylvia Plumery at 303-841-4896.

Checks can be mailed to The Gary Plumery Foundation, 7119 E. Mountain Brush Circle, Highlands Ranch, CO 80130-5311.
