'Best Small Rodeo' to kick off this weekend
Contributed by: Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo on 6/3/2008

The biggest event of the year in these parts is just days away, bringing with it all the fun and festiveness that fosters immense pride and a sense of community in the heart of Elbert County.

That event is the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo and it happens June 6-8. While highlighted by three consecutive PRCA-rodeo competitions, the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo also draws thousands to this ranching community for homespun, patriotic traditions such as a parade, a tribute to the Armed Services, dancing and charitable giving.

"It's everything you could want to do and see in the West in one weekend," Norm Almquist said of the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo.

The president of the Stampede board of directors, Almquist steers an army of volunteers who invest hundreds of hours of time and a wealth of energy into making the rodeo and accompanying events a memorable one for all involved.

Year after year, the giant volunteer effort results in rewards in the form of satisfied fans and "Best Small Rodeo of the Year" honors. The Elizabeth Stampede has won the PRCA Western States Circuit title for eight years running and Almquist is counting on a ninth.

"We do our best to bring residents and visitors alike together for a great time in celebration of the western lifestyle," Almquist said. "What better way to get your Colorado summer started than with everything that we all love about living here all wrapped into one weekend."

Packed into a weekend of nonstop exhilaration is the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo debut of the Professional Bull Rider's tour at 7 p.m. Friday, June 6, at the rodeo grounds in Casey Jones Park.

The Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo is the newest stop on the PBR Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, featuring top stock, top competitors and never-before-seen bull-riding action in central Colorado.

"The PBR is the preeminent bull riding organization in the world. We're very excited about partnering with them to bring an event of this quality to Elizabeth," Almquist said.

PBR night at the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo also features a silent auction for the Tough Enough to Wear Pink fight against breast cancer and a mutton-busting competition for youth. Immediately following the bull riding, KYGO radio personality Mudflap and the Flap-N-Jacks are making an encore Elizabeth Stampede appearance, performing for the Queen's Dance.

While Friday night is all about the bulls, Saturday is all about family. It's Stampede Family Day and it kicks off with a parade through Elizabeth starting at 10 a.m. and rounds out with an afternoon PRCA rodeo performance, a continuation of the TETWP silent auction, more mutton busting and an evening rodeo performance, sponsored by KYGO and dedicated to the TETWP campaign.

All rodeo contestants and attendees are invited to wear pink and help promote the cause, with rodeo ticket proceeds benefiting local breast cancer charities, Renee's Fund and Lancaster's Barrel Race for the Cure. More dancing is in store with Mudflap and the Flap-N-Jacks immediately following the rodeo and the close of the TETWP auction.

The final day of the Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo features a traditional cowboy church service, a free PRCA timed event slack and a rodeo performance dedicated to all veterans and active-duty servicemen and women. The third and final PRCA rodeo performance features a "Red, White and Blue" theme in tribute to those who have served their country in times of war and peace.

Special ticket pricing is available for all veterans and active-duty personnel attending the rodeo. Sunday's festivities also feature the 2009 Elizabeth Stampede Rodeo royalty court crowning.
